Our
Programs
Our many years of experience in the field have shown that
community-led
endeavors have lasting effects on the well-being of participants and their communities.
In our education program and in other projects, we use methods and approaches that enable participants to reflect on their previous experiences, gain new information, and make decisions based on a collaborative process that includes all members of their own and neighboring villages.
Currently, Tostan offers a 30-month holistic education program called the
Community Empowerment Program
to hundreds of villages in West and East Africa. In addition, Tostan has adapted a special version of this program for prisoners in Senegal.
For the past three years, Tostan has also worked on behalf of the
talibés,
young boys who are forced to beg in the streets of Senegalese urban areas.
As recently as 2009, Tostan began collaborating with the Barefoot College of India to empower impoverished communities by providing women with the ability to understand and maintain solar panels.
Solar power
provides electriciy to rural areas and improves day-to-day life drastically.
